Everyone’s favourite, Showbag is an old-style policeman who likes to operate alone. He is the kind of detective you need on a case like this: battle-hardened and suspicious by nature, he provides the perfect foil to Jane’s more rarefied theories. But he sees them as a team. ‘The brains and the brawn’, he calls them – though Jane will challenge him on who is which. But no-one can come up with a better one-liner that Showy when morale is tested and the chips are down. Imperfect, at times approximate – but a life-sustaining force of nature.
