About The Book

Step back in time with the next title in the best-selling Magnificent Treasures series. Through bite-size text, 7-12-year-olds explore iconic artifacts from the ancient Greek world.

Travel back in time more than 3000 years to visit ancient Greece. See the stunning masks of Greek theatre and gaze at the goddess Nike’s powerful statue. Marvel at the weapons and armor used by hoplite footsoldiers. Experience the excitement of a chariot race at the pan-Hellenic games. Examine the glistening gold mask of Agamemnon and the oldest known computer. Through a baby’s rattle and a child’s toy horse, learn about the lives of ancient Greek children. Dozens of ancient Greek treasures are depicted in detailed, full-color illustrations, accompanied by fascinating facts about their use, lore, and history.

Each of the 36 treasures represents an artistic era or style, from the Bronze Age, through the Archaic and Classical periods, to the Hellenic. Easy-to-read bullet points explain key art techniques, such as how artists created a fresco, a mosaic, a pottery drinking cup, or a stunning gold bracelet. Through world-famous and iconic treasures, the book shows what it was like to live in ancient Greece, whether you were rich or poor, famous or anonymous—covering everything from the myths that underpinned rituals to the customs at after-dinner parties. Every treasure is accompanied by a Fact File, detailing its date, size, and materials, as well as where it can be found today. At the back of the book, a map shows where each treasure was discovered.
