Chapter 1 A SPECIAL PROJECT
Henry Heckelbeck was thrilled because it was Friday. And Friday meant no homework until Monday. Woooo!
Then his teacher, Ms. Mizzle, made an announcement.
She said, “Class, I am going to assign a very special science project!”
Henry looked over at his best friend, Dudley Day. Both boys knew “special project” meant “homework.” And they were both right.
Ms. Mizzle smiled. “I think you’ll like this one. We are going to build robots!”
The class gasped, and everyone began talking until Ms. Mizzle whistled through her fingers. The class buzz stopped.
“You have one week to build your robot,” she said.
“Can we make the robot however we want?” asked Adia Ackers.
Ms. Mizzle nodded. “Yes! Use any materials you’d like. Have fun! Be creative!”
Dudley raised his hand. “May we even use CANDY?”
“And Popsicle sticks?” asked somebody else.
“What if we wanted to make an animal robot?” blurted another student.
Ms. Mizzle laughed. “Yes to all your questions!”
The bell rang. Chairs scraped across the floor.
“Get started this weekend!” Ms. Mizzle called over the noise. “And we will talk about your plans on Monday.”
Henry and Dudley walked to their cubbies.
“I might make a soccer ball robot,” said Dudley. “What about you?”
Henry shrugged. “I’m not sure yet.”
The boys grabbed their backpacks and gave each other a high five.
The weekend had officially begun!
